Holyhead Town Council is made up of 16 elected Councillors who serve five-year terms, representing the interests of the local community. Councillors volunteer their time, with an optional annual allowance of £150. Each year, a Town Mayor is elected at the Annual General Meeting to serve a one-year term. Councillors also represent the town on various statutory bodies.
What We Do
The Town Council is responsible for a range of local services and facilities, including:
- Maintenance of six local playing fields
- Management of the Town Hall, used by local organisations
- Maes Hyfryd Cemetery and the Joint Burial Committee (with Treaddur Bay)
- Plas Road Allotments
- Local bus shelters and roundabouts
- The Cenotaph and partial upkeep of the Town Clock
- Cleaning of the Celtic Gateway Bridge
- Maintenance of the newly formed kiosks – previous shelters on Newry Beach.
Our Team
The Council employs a dedicated team to support its operations:
- Town Clerk & Deputy Clerk – Oversee financial management and provide legal and procedural guidance
- Administrative Assistant – Manages databases, handles enquiries, and takes minutes at meetings
- Caretaker – Maintains and manages access to the Town Hall
- Handyman & Team of four – Maintain outdoor spaces and public infrastructure
- Tourism & Grants Officer – Organises events during the cruise season and throughout the year
- Community services manager: leads a team of up to 10 leisure assistants serving the councils many commercial aspects.
Three additional staff maintain the cemetery under the Joint Burial Committee.
Supporting the Community
Each year, Holyhead Town Council donates over £4,000 to local causes, including the Maritime Festival, youth organisations, and gifts dictionaries to all Year 6 pupils moving to secondary school.
The Empire Complex
In 2013, the Council secured a 25-year lease on the historic Empire building and obtained grant funding to refurbish the old cinema. This project created a modern soft play centre, open to all ages. Recently, with support from the Levelling Up Fund, the complex was expanded to provide additional space and enhanced facilities.
Y Parc/Cwt Crempog
In 2017 the Town Council took over the previous “Big Park”. Undergoing a major renovation to the old “pavilion” building it seen the park go from strength to strength, The Town Council were successful in securing grants through Sports Wales & Welsh Gov. to improve the facilities which now holds Holyhead’s first ever All Weather 3G Football pitch. In 2023 Y Parc then became “Cwt Crempog” serving fresh pancakes along with the classic hot meals.
